Increased cyber risk during COVID-19 pandemic

Creating cyber security awareness is key - please be aware of cybercriminals taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic.

We cannot be too careful these days, there is an increased cyber risk during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cybercriminals have lately started spreading real-time, accurate information about global infection rates with regards to the Coronavirus as an attempt to infect computers with malicious software. Numerous coronavirus themed phishing attacks and hacking campaigns have been detected worldwide. Techniques seen since the start of the year include bogus emails with links claiming to have important updates, which once clicked on lead to devices being infected. These ‘phishing’ attempts have been seen in several countries and can lead to loss of money and sensitive data.

Several companies have implemented home office locations for a substantial part of the organization. We highly recommend implementing two-factor authentication in order to reduce the risk for cyber breaches, as it is an easy way to add an additional layer of security to your organization.

It’s critical to ensure that your workforce is aware of the risks and thereby creating a culture of security awareness.

As long as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to be front-page news, cybercriminals will continue to use it to spread malware. We recommend taking the increased risk seriously and educate your organization on the aspects of phishing campaigns. It is becoming increasingly difficult to identify malicious emails.

Please remember to:

  • Be wary of any emails that urge you to take immediate action of any kind
  • Never click on links or open attachments without first making sure the request is authentic.
  • Call the sender by looking up their phone number independently.
  • Never call a phone number included in a suspicious email or reply to the sender.

If you have any question regarding how to create a culture of security awareness, or what Globetech can assist you with during this challenging time, please do not hestitate to contact us.
